A Letter from a Lesbian Therapist Who Gets It
As you might expect, True North Counseling & Development has had an increase of clients lately who are concerned about current social and political changes. As therapists, my we notice the increase in mental health concerns that clients are bringing to their sessions right now.
These current concerns trigger prior problems. For example, people with big and small trauma histories experience heightened sensitivity. People who were already depressed or anxious seem to be even more anxious and/or depressed, decision-making feels more complex. Experiencing decision “paralysis” creates even more fear for the future and difficulty with personal and professional growth. Our clients are having a hard time taking in so much information coming at them all at once.
At True North, we want you to know we see this and understand it. We are taking it into consideration as we work with our clients. Even though we’re therapists, we’re living in this world too, and we’re experiencing what’s happening at the same time as our clients. We truly are all in this together.
While it may seem overwhelming, this is an especially good time to engage in a therapeutic relationship and process. Therapy can help you gain clarity, heal from past issues, and make good decisions. It can lead to you being stronger, more focused, and more genuinely hopeful (rather than “fingers crossed behind your back” hopeful).
We are professionally trained and licensed therapists who take extra precautions with each of our clients to choose an appropriate depth and speed of therapy during these challenging times. We’re inspired when we consistently see our clients take what they’re learning in therapy and apply it to their everyday lives.
If you have been considering whether or not to begin therapy, now is a good time to reach out to us and see how we can walk with you through this difficult time.
